RCN: Prevention of Needlestick Injury

In the August/September 2008, a short postcard survey was used to explore nurses’ experience of needlestick injury across the UK. The responses from 4,407 RCN members showed that roughly half of all nurses have had an injury at some point in their careers. A quarter of nurses reported that they fear needlestick injury a great deal. The survey also explored the extent to which training and safer devices are available to reduce the risk of injury. More than half (57%) considered that the availability of safer needlestick devices was essential.
The research was commissioned by the RCN and supported by an educational grant from sanofi aventis, and the findings were launched at a Parliamentary Reception in November 2008.
