The purpose of this project is to set up a longitudinal research panel that can explore changes in the employment experiences, views and aspirations of nurses aged 50 plus in the alter stages of their nursing careers. The sorts of questions that are being addressed by this panel include: What kinds of employment are preferred by nurses at this stage of their careers? What would encourage more nurses to remain in nursing for longer? What are the challenges facing nurses in the later stages of their careers? What are the issues facing nurses in their retirement planning?

This research is building on the 2009 RCN Employment Survey contacting again nurses aged 50 plus who participated in this research to follow up their careers a year later as well as surveying a further 700 nurses aged 50 plus to top up the sample.

2009 Past Imperfect Future Tense: Nurses Employment and Morale This report describes the findings from the 22nd RCN employment survey of a sample of RCN members. Nine thousand nurses from across the UK were surveyed, using a methodology which builds on a longstanding series of surveys (with many parts of the questionnaire standardised since 1992) so changes over time can be reported. 54% responded to the survey.

The findings highlight differences between important subgroups of nurses by employer, grade/AfC pay band, job title, specialty as well looking at biographical differences such as; age, gender, ethnicity, internationally recruited nurses etc. The report focuses on: pay bands and grading, working hours, workload and staffing, job change and career progression, continuing professional development and the morale of nurses. An important feature of the RCN employment surveys is the ability to highlight changes over time in all these issues.

In addition to the main UK report separate reports were also produced for nurses living in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
2009 Practice Nurses in 2009 and 2003 The purpose of this research was to provide a summary of employment related statistics as they pertain to practice nurses, comparing results for this group with all nurses using the 2009 employment survey and where possible, with those for 2003 the last year when the sample size was large enough to allow reliable analysis of the practice nurse sub-group.

With 9,000 nurses from across the UK being covered by the survey, there are sufficient numbers of important sub-groups of nurses working outside the NHS to allow detailed analysis and comparisons with previous data sets. In addition a top-up sample of 300 practice nurses was also included in the 2009 methodology to enable analysis this key specialty of the nursing workforce.
